Have you received calls from potential patients asking if they qualify for a free hair transplant, claiming they saw your ad online? Your practice may be an unwitting participant in a widespread affiliate marketing scam targeting the hair restoration industry nationwide.
At HLM, we first became aware of this issue when several of our clients reached out, perplexed by a sudden influx of inquiries about “free” restorations they never advertised. Alarmed by the scale of this scheme, we contacted our network of industry partners, urging them to watch for this scam ad. The responses confirmed our fears – practices across the country were fielding the same inquiries, all traced back to this single ad.
As we investigated, we discovered these leads were coming from a deceptive ad promising free procedures from “med school graduates”. Here’s how the scam works: The scammer creates an ad offering free hair transplants, using language designed to entice potential patients. When users click the ad, they’re taken to a generic landing page filled with Google AdSense ads. What is Google AdSense? It’s a program that allows website owners to display Google Ads on their pages, generating revenue when users click those ads. It’s often used to monetize blogs or websites that curate news. In this case, the scammer is exploiting the program to profit from fraudulent clicks.

But how does this involve your practice? The ads displayed on the scammer’s page are geo-targeted, meaning they’re tailored to the user’s location. If your practice runs Google Ads and is located in the same area as the user, your ad most likely appeared on this scam page if you remember these calls and inquiries.
When the confused user, still expecting information about the free transplant, clicks your ad, you’re charged for that click. They then call your practice, tying up staff time with inquiries about a non-existent offer. The scammer pockets the AdSense revenue, while you lose ad budget and potential leads.
The impact on the hair restoration industry has been significant. Practices nationwide are watching their ad budgets drain, paying for fraudulent clicks that never convert to real leads. Staff are overwhelmed by dead-end inquiries, diverting time and resources away from genuine prospects.
To protect your practice, it’s crucial to identify if you’ve been ensnared in this scam. Watch for these red flags:
- A sudden influx of calls about “free” restorations you never advertised.
- Patients mention seeing an ad featuring “med school graduates” or any similar odd discount offering free or heavily reduced procedures.
- Unexplained spikes in ad spend without a corresponding increase in qualified leads.
- Unusual traffic patterns or high bounce rates in your Google Analytics.
If you suspect your practice has been affected, take immediate action:
- Train your staff to identify and document scam inquiries. Have them ask callers where they saw the ad and what specifically it promised.
- Audit your Google Ads account and/or any other ad campaigns on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or Bing for suspicious activity. Look for unexplained spikes in cost per click or changes in traffic quality.
- Review your Google Analytics for unusual traffic from suspicious websites. If you identify any, have your marketing team follow these steps to request your ads do not appear on those domains.
- Implement negative keywords to prevent your ads from appearing on scam pages. Include phrases like “free hair transplant” and “med school graduate”.
- Monitor your campaigns closely, watching for any further signs of fraudulent activity. If you or your marketing team suspect you’ve been charged for illegitimate clicks, report it to the ad platform and request a refund.
In addition to these steps, Google offers a way to block your ads from appearing on specific websites or domains. This can be an effective tool for preventing your ads from being shown on scam pages. Google’s official guidance provides detailed instructions on how to exclude placements:
01
In your Google Ads account, click the “Placements” page from the left-side menu.
02
Click the “Exclusions” tab at the top of the page.
03
Click the pencil icon to edit your exclusions.
04
Select “Add placement exclusion” or “Use placement exclusion list”.
05
Enter the URL(s) you want to exclude, or select from your existing lists.
06
Click “Save” to apply your changes.
By proactively blocking known scam sites, you can minimize the risk of your ads being displayed to fraudulent traffic and protect your ad budget. Identifying fraudulent clicks can be tricky, but there are a few telltale signs:
- Sudden, unexplained spikes in click volume or cost per click
- Abnormally high click-through rates from certain placements or geographies
- Mismatched user behavior, such as extremely short session durations or high bounce rates
If you notice any of these red flags, compile evidence like screenshots and analytics reports to support your refund request. Each ad platform has its own process, but most require you to submit a form detailing the suspected fraudulent activity and providing supporting documentation.
